Key Tax Deadlines for Individuals in February 2026

The season of managing your tax priorities has arrived, and February brings crucial deadlines for individuals. Let's dive into what you need to know about estimated tax payments, tipping obligations, and W-4 requirements this month.

February 2: Estimated Tax Filers

If you missed the January 15 deadline for your last 2025 estimated tax installment, you have the option to submit your income tax return (Form 1040 or 1040-SR) by February 2. Doing so lets you avoid penalties for late payment of the January installment. In cases where filing and payment aren't possible by this date, ensure everything is settled by the April 15 filing deadline.

February 10: Tip Income Reporters

Employees earning $20 or more in tips during January must notify their employers by using IRS Form 4070 or a custom statement containing their details and the tip amount. Employers will account for FICA taxes and income tax withholding from this reported amount. If regular earnings are insufficient to cover these withholdings, this shortfall will be reflected in box 8 of your annual W-2, necessitating settlement upon tax return filing.

February 17: W-4 Exemption Renewals

For those who claimed an exemption from tax withholding on Form W-4 last year, a brand-new W-4 submission to your employer is necessary by February 17 to continue this exemption for the upcoming year.

Important Considerations

Weekend and Holiday Extensions

In the event a deadline lands on a weekend or public holiday, it automatically shifts to the subsequent business day that isn't a holiday.

Disaster Relief Extensions

Tax deadlines might extend if you reside in an area labeled as a disaster zone. Verify your region's status and relevant extensions by visiting FEMA's Disaster Declarations or checking the IRS Tax Relief page.
