Service industry professionals must stay on top of monthly reporting requirements to avoid end-of-year tax surprises. If you work for tips and earned more than $20 in gratuities during April, you are legally required to report that income to your employer by May 11.

Proper Reporting and Withholding

You can submit IRS Form 4070 or provide a signed written statement detailing your name, address, Social Security number, employer information, the specific period, and total tips received. Your employer will then withhold FICA and income taxes from your regular paycheck. If standard wages cannot cover these taxes, the uncollected amount is reported in Box 8 of your W-2. You are responsible for paying this balance when filing your annual return.
