Critical October 2025 Tax Deadlines for Businesses

As cooler fall days arrive, businesses must stay vigilant with crucial tax obligations. October presents essential deadlines, from corporate filings and payroll deposits to retirement plan contributions. Missing these can lead to significant penalties, so be sure to mark your calendars with these key dates.

October 15 - Corporate Tax Filing
If your corporation operates on a calendar year and you've secured an automatic six-month extension since April 15, now is the moment to submit your 2024 income tax return (Form 1120) and settle any outstanding tax, interest, and penalties.

October 15 - Employment Tax Deposits
Employers must deposit Social Security, Medicare, and withheld income taxes by this date, according to the monthly deposit rules, for wages paid in September 2025. The same timeline applies to nonpayroll withholding deposits for September.

October 15 - Retirement Plan Actions
For self-employed individuals who have filed an extension for their tax returns, October 15 marks the deadline to establish a Keogh Plan for 2024. Additionally, it's the final day to fund any SEP or Keogh plans for 2024 under an extended return filing.

October 31 - Quarterly Tax Filing
Form 941, which reports third-quarter employment taxes, is due on this date. Businesses must ensure any outstanding tax liabilities are settled. Companies with tax liabilities under $2,500 can make direct payments with their returns. Full and timely deposits leading up to this deadline give you until November 10 to file.

October 31 - Small Employer and FUTA Obligations
If smaller businesses see a tax liability of $2,500 or more in 2025, adjustments should be settled by this date. Also, for the Federal Unemployment Tax Act (FUTA), deposits exceeding $500 owed through September must be completed.

Key Exceptions and Extensions:

Weekend and Holiday Adjustments: Should a deadline fall on a weekend or public holiday, it automatically extends to the next business day.

Disaster Area Extensions: Regions affected by natural disasters may receive extended deadlines. Check the FEMA and IRS sites for updates on designated disaster areas and relevant filing extensions.
