Important December 2025 Tax Deadlines and Planning Tips

As December 2025 unfolds, it’s imperative to remember key tax-related deadlines, including year-end planning, tip reporting, IRA withdrawals, and final payments for deductibles. Ensuring these tasks are timely addressed can significantly impact your financial outcomes for the year.

December 1 - Commence Year-End Tax Planning

It's essential to kick-start or complete your tax planning for 2025 this month. If you’ve experienced substantial income shifts, marital status changes, or property sales during the year, scheduling a tax planning consultation can help optimize your tax situation.

December 10 - Employee Tip Reporting

Employees receiving over $20 in tips for November must report these on IRS Form 4070 by December 10. Employers will handle FICA and income tax withholdings, reflecting any uncollected amounts on your W-2. Ensure that your wage amounts cover necessary withholdings to avoid additional liabilities.

December 31 - IRA Mandatory Withdrawal Deadline

Individuals born before January 1, 1952, must withdraw from their Traditional IRA by December 31 to dodge penalties. For those turning 73 within the year, the first required distribution pertains to 2025, but a delay until April 1, 2026, is permissible. Ensure arrangements are made prior if institutional closures occur on the deadline.

December 31 - Pay 2025 Deductible Expenses

All deductible expenses eligible for the 2025 tax return must be paid by December 31. This excludes IRA, SEP, or Keogh contributions, which are acceptable post this date.

End-of-Year Considerations

To avoid end-of-year rush complications, initiate actions before December 31 if procedures can't finalize in one day. Be mindful that financial institutions may close early or entirely on the 31st.
